My life's not an adventure, but it keeps me awake. Sometimes.

I returned to the states in June 2004, and began what I expected to be a boring life. My expectations were not met. Sure some of it is mind-numbing, but I've been having mini-adventures that keep me pseudo-sane.

7/27 Poor little Gus

He's been breathing kind of weird lately so I made an appointment for him on Friday morning. Then when I got home today he had thrown up on the couch. I knew it was him because there were no hairballs in it. I can't remember the last time he threw up, so I knew the little guy was sick. BUT that must have made him feel a lot better because he finally showed some energy and acted like he felt good. So I took him to the dog park (couldn't make myself take him for a mile walk tonight). He had fun there. Besides a Rhodesian Ridgeback, there was an Afghan and a Great Dane. Such huge dogs. I tried but I couldn't get them in a picture together. He's sound asleep now at my feet. I can't get him to move at all.

7/25 A good day except for WW

I've loved today. This morning I went to WW and gained a half pound--BUT it was my only gain in 11 weeks and I feel really good about that. Today I'm starting counting my points using my iPhone and that will make things easier. No excuses.

Then Sarah and I took Gussie to lunch and to the dog park. Dropped him back at home and we went to see The Ugly Truth--probably the funniest chick flick I've ever seen. Sarah and I were embarrassingly LOUD with our laughter. We both heartily recommend it. Especially the panties part. (I'm laughing out loud just thinking about it.)

After I dropped Sarah off, I again picked up Gussie and we went to the park to the Curran family reunion, at Mark's invitation. I saw so many people that I knew (especially Cathy, with whom I went to school, and Mark of course). Mark's daughter Nikki is absolutely stunning with stunning children too. Such fun.

Then Gus and I came home and walked for a mile using my iPhone GPS pedometer. It only cost $1.99 and is fantastic.

A truly good day.

He is adorable but he's marking his territory all over my house. I can't stand it. I've left both dogs outside as much as I can but they are both crying to get in. I'm going to put him in a crate and then will try to sleep. Hope it works.

7/14 Dog park

Yesterday Gus and I went to the dog park again after I got home from work. Some of his pals from the previous day were there, and it's becoming a social event for me as well as for him. Nice to see people I already "knew."

Today, I don't need to take him because he was at doggy day care and is already tired out.

On another note, just returned from a wonderful, wonderful dinner at Debbie's. She and her two girls really put on a spread. Wish I could have eaten more, it was that good. Thanks so much for inviting me.

Tomorrow the dog park opens and I'm really happy. For $10 a year your pooch and run and play with other dogs. I love keeping Gussie socialized. Plus I haven't felt like walking him all week, and I feel guilty. Feel okay tonight, courtesy of sangria.

7/7 The good and bad

It's been wonderful seeing our old friend, Ron Johnson, these past few days. He, Tim, and Phil were army buddies, stationed together in Hawaii. Ron knew Robbie really well as a little guy, because after I had major surgery Phil had to go to the field and Ron came back to Hawaii and took care of Robbie (and me) until Phil got back.

Plus he was instrumental in us getting Jill. There's a longer story there that I'll save for another time. He's a great guy.

Just returned from Tiramisu where Jan, Tim, Ron, Uncle Bill and I had dinner. Delicioso!

6/20 Rainy days

Note this is not a complaint, merely an observation: I slept a lot of the day asleep because I have a migraine. The weather has played havoc with most of my body, head, back, hips, leg, shoulders, etc. This is the gift of arthritis. Mix it with rainy weather and voila!

Jan called. She, Tim, Joe and Cindy are going to Junefest to meet some other family members, but I just didn't feel like going. They'll have a good time, I'm sure.

6/14 I love weekends

Yesterday WW told me I stayed the same. And after two weeks of family events I'm pretty darn proud of that. Now to get back to really working on getting healthy.

Last night was St. Francis Parish Picnic. Absolutely perfect weather. It's great to see people you went to school with and their parents, spouses, and kids. I love it. Trouble is--last year was my first year back and I was in the midst of really bad back pain so just stayed a short while. (Plus ate a giant sno cone and onion rings. Boy did that ever make me sick.)

So I was really looking forward to last night. Unfortunately my back was a problem. I didn't eat or drink anything and stayed a little more than an hour. I'd been doing well for a few months, but I think dancing at two weddings in a row might have done me in. Today it's still bad, so I'm hoping a little rest (but not too much) will help.

I can tell you this because I don't have my "no complaint" bracelet on yet. At work we got purple bracelets from a Complaint Free World. Here are the "rules":

"Suggested Rules

Begin to wear the bracelet, on either wrist.

When you catch yourself complaining, gossiping or criticizing (it’s ok, everyone does) move the bracelet to the other arm and begin again.

If you hear someone else who is wearing a bracelet complain, you may point out their need to switch the bracelet to the other arm; BUT if you’re going to do this, you must move your bracelet first!

Stay with it. It may take many months but when you reach 21 days you will find that your entire life is happier, more loving and more enjoyable."

On the website it also says that you can say something with a negative connotation as long as there's no ego involved in it. You can tell the waiter that your soup is cold--that's just a statement of fact. It's the comments to your friend afterward that's complaining. It's okay for me to say my back hurts, but when I say my back hurts and I didn't get to stay at the picnic and everyone else was having a good time without me and I didn't even get to have one beer, etc. That's complaining. Which is why, if I had my bracelet on, I would have moved it to the other wrist. I'm trying to go 21 days straight without complaining. Not easy. But I've gone several days, then just mess up. The nice thing is that the bracelet isn't judgmental. :)

Rob and Beata (and Chilli) are on the road and should arrive tomorrow sometime. I can't wait.

Have been straightening up the house and have put in some more flowers in the yard. But I'll need help with more of them. The last poppy faded into oblivion--the storm knocked off the petals, so that made me sad. Wanted R and B to see those huge orange blooms. And of course Gussie had to pee on the rug. 5/8/09 A great day

My sister and brother-in-law (Jan and Tim) are celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary. That's really something to celebrate!

And 54 years ago today I made my first Communion. Another day to celebrate. :) I remember it very clearly. Feeling like a 7-year-old bride in my white dress and veil. It was such a special feeling. After the Mass, we went home and had a really big party and I got so many presents. I remember my godfather, Uncle Bob, gave me a statue of Mary and I treasured that for many years. Don't know what happened to it, but probably one of my five brothers broke it. When in doubt, blame it on your brother.

5/2 A day with ups and downs

A huge happy birthday to my favorite grand-daughter. Kayla is 9 years old today. Can't believe it. It seems like just yesterday I was holding this beautiful infant girl in my arms. She's still beautiful though. And quite the soccer player. She told me today, "You won't believe what happened. Mommy and Daddy and Uncle Joe and Aunt Cindy...(I had no idea where this was going)...gave me the same birthday card--a dalmatian with spots. Isn't that funny?"

She's adorable.

Then Pete had some problems today which caused a trip to the ER. He's absolutely fine now, but it caused a lot of worry for a short time.

Jan and I (and Gussie) went to the Juvenile Diabetes Walk at South Park. We were supposed to walk for an hour. Gussie and I made it for 33 minutes. Afterward Jan came over and planted some more flowers I'd bought. She's helped me so much and my backyard is looking really good. Last year the garden went to pot because I couldn't do anything at all. I can't do much now, but can do some things.

Jane, Pete, and I just returned from Ruby Tuesday for dinner. It was very good. Jane and I re-joined Weight Watchers this morning and we behaved very well at dinner.

4/26/09 Another great day

Jan and I spent the day together. We bought flowers and plants for my garden and then came back here and Jan did all the hard work. So thanks a million, Jan, for all your help.

We also went out to lunch which was so relaxing and enjoyable for me. I look forward to eating with family on the weekend.

Joe and Cindy helped me out too, by bringing extra mulch.

4/25/09 Another good day

Gus and I had a fun day. This morning I (without my faithful companion) went to Great Debate books downtown. Off Broadway, the coffee house located inside, had free coffee and food for QU professors and adjuncts. I met some nice people, including reconnecting with Jimmy's old girlfriend, Barb, who reminded me of when they would come over to John's and my house on Maine Street. (Not brother John, husband John.)

Then I picked up Gus and we went to my office for a few hours. Following that, a leisurely trip to the pet store and we saw Cindy out in the parking lot. She was buying more flowers for her beautiful garden.

This afternoon Jane called and asked if I wanted to go to Jan's for dinner and I yelled SURE! The food was awesome and so was the company. Just got home and finished up the article I'd started earlier in the day.

4/24 A good life

At 1 I met Jan, Tim, Pete, Jane, Sarah, Jordan, and Ashley for lunch at Krieger's. What a perfect way to spend part of Friday afternoon. Cindy walked by and we chatted with her a while.

Jan stopped by my house a little later with some lovely flowers for my garden. She's the greenest thumbed person I know and she'll help me know the weeds from the not-weeds. Of course I can't do much work myself, but I'm feeling pretty good and can surely do some.

We spoke of all the activities going on this summer, and I think I'm going to walk in the Susan B Koman 5k in Peoria with Jan, Kristen, and Jane. Because we're missing the Avon Breast Cancer Walk this year, we want to do something.

Gus and I took a mile walk this afternoon too, and I saw John (our brother). It was nice to talk to him too. (Oh, yesterday I forgot to blog that it wasn't just Gussie's birthday, it was Bozie's too. And speaking of cats, Allie Cat had diarrhea on my bedroom carpeting this morning. But I still love her.)

Normally that would make me want to take it home but since they're $2500 each I think I'll pass. But if I were rich one of those puppies would be mine. Gussie and I walked more than a mile this morning and that was great. Later, Cindy and Cody came over for a little bit for Cody to move a file cabinet (small one on wheels...I mean he's strong and all...but...) Thanks, Cody. I really do appreciate your help. I couldn't get that thing moved.

Today was so busy I can't even begin to describe it--except to say I should have stayed most of the evening. I just threw unfinished work into the desk drawer, locked it, and jumped out of there at 5:30. Tomorrow when Gus is at Alpha Dog I'll probably not pick him up until 6:30 because there's so much to do.

3/31 Let the kids see you fight

Stayed home from work today. Bad headache and so tired. Slept all day until a few hours ago. Woke up, let Gussie outside and he went right to the mud hole from where the sump pump empties. Yuck. And my bathtub looks horrible after bathing him. Don't feel like cleaning now. So I'll clean it in the morning while I shower.

So tired that I fell asleep in the recliner and didn't even wake up for two phone calls. Plus my sister Jan came into the house, spoke to me, sat in the living room with me and watched TV, all the while I'm snoring. Now that's tired. 3/26 Yawn

Two thirteen hour days in a row. I am beyond tired. Then I had to come home and write an article. Ah, such is life. Gussie is spending the night at Alpha Dog because I didn't want to leave him here two evenings in a row. He's sleeping with Louie, a male Havanese, who is the proud father of five puppies born yesterday. Elizabeth is keeping him out of the house for a while, until the pups are a little bigger. Louie and Gussie are great friends and play together all the time. I'm glad Gus has another pup to sleep with. (No, Jeff, he's not gay.)

3/25 A very long day

Went to work at 7 this morning and got home after 8 tonight. A long day; the last few hours of which was spent teaching at QU, and that was fun. My regular work was difficult today, full of one crisis after another. Of course, that's what the job entails, but it sure takes it out of you.

Thanks, Cindy, for taking care of Gussie. I think he looks so cute since he got groomed today. All clean and cute. Of course I like him with long hair too. Guess I just like him. (But clean is best.) :)

Yep, Gussie and Bozie are both 11 months old today, and Allie is 9 months old. They are sure growing. Gussie is now 18 pounds. If he gets too much bigger I won't be able to lift him anymore, and that would make me sad. He should be about done growing.

Gus and I walked for about 2/3 of a mile tonight and I'm not feeling too bad, so that made me happy.

3/22 Lazy day

This was an extremely lazy day. All I did was laundry and work on the QU class--oh and watch TV with my pets. That's it. I hate being this lazy, but wasted a whole day off.

Cindy told me about a bridge in Biloxi that collapsed and I was really worried. Luckily it wasn't a big bridge, but it was a really long one. It goes over the Back Bay and Big Lake. Thank heavens no one was hurt even though a car did fall in the water, but no one was in it. A barge hit the bridge and that's why it collapsed.

3/21 An odd day

A year ago today I moved from Biloxi to Quincy. Wow, time has flown by.

I'd planned to work on my class for QU and to write my article. But Jane and I went shopping at CJ Banks--40% off of everything in the store. Couldn't resist that. And the great thing is that Cindy took Gussie for a walk while I was shopping. I'm so grateful. Afterward we went to lunch with the rest of her family. Then went to TJ Maxx.

While there I got a crisis call (am on call this week). Had to go to Pittsfield to help out a colleague. So poor Jane and Sarah had to take me home to get my car. Jane suggested I take Gussie with me. I wouldn't have thought of that--but it was a great idea, Jane. We got to spend time together--one hour drive there and one hour drive back. The hour I was in the sheriff's office he slept, so it worked out well. Thanks for the idea, Jane.

Tonight's article is a real downer, but a sign of the times. Suicide forest.

3/16 Very busy day

Work just didn't seem to end today, but at least the day went by fast because I was so busy. I didn't come home at lunch to let Gussie out, so he was in the house for over 11 hours and he didn't have an accident. I was so proud. (Then why does he go outside sometimes, come back and pee?) Anyway, he was a rock star today. I took him for a quick walk then had to write my article. As soon as I have dinner I'll get to work on my QU class. It starts this Wednesday.

They wanted to go to Kutters, but there was a 45 minute wait, so we went to the Elks. Deb Stotts joined us when she was finished in the ER--yeah, her girls were in a car accident, but luckily they are okay. They have whiplash and will be really stiff tomorrow. Poor things. 3/4 What a nice surprise

Well, the surprise was a little anxiety-provoking at first, but then it became wonderful. I got home early, about 5:15 PM and Gussie was gone. I had a brief moment of semi-panic, but it went away quickly. I figured Cindy had taken him for a walk. I must confess that it made me very happy.

I'd promised myself I'd take Gus for a walk tonight no matter how I felt. And it was good that Cindy did it, so I didn't have to feel guilty if I didn't go. I've been feeling pretty good until the afternoon and then it's "not fun." But still much better than it was.

So I just finished writing my article (Can zapping rid you of compulsions?) and now I'm going to make dinner and watch America's Next Top Model.

And no, I don't think Jason from the Bachelor is a jerk. I think he was really scared he was making a mistake and he knew he didn't want to get divorced again. So I'd call him human. Not too classy at one point, but human. I still like him.

2/28 A wonderful day with my family

I spent the day with Jane and Sarah and it was really fun, although tiring. We spent so much time together that we had both lunch and dinner. Pete joined us for dinner. Then we went to Joe and Cindy's to say hi to Eric and Julie. And Gussie dragged his butt on the floor and made poop streaks. All because I gave him some Greenies and they made "stuff" stick to his fur. God bless him.

And God bless Joe and Cindy. They didn't even blink. While I cleaned Gussie's bottom they cleaned the rug. Kirby just watched.

I left early to write my article, so they're probably all still talking about me. :)

2/8 Horribly competitive

I am. Always have been. And since I'm 61 I probably always will be. But I'm also a good loser. I have to be since I lose more often than win, unless it's word games--then I have a fighting chance.

Anyway I thought of this because every chance I get I check my examiner.com numbers and where I am in comparison to other writers. I get to see the top 5 in the Chicago area, and those are in all topics, not just health. And I also get to see the top 5 in Health nationally.

This afternoon I'm number 2 nationally in Health and number 1 in Chicago. So yeah, I'm bragging. Had to write about it right away because it will soon change. :)
